Digital artwork by Maxime Chanson, ArtistProfiler aims to help artists to identify their artistic particularity by offering:
- A typology of artistic profiles; and
- A search engine which helps you find the artistic profile of your chosen artist.
An artist is unique both in terms of their vision, which spurs them to create, as well as the means of expression employed.
For ArtistProfiler, this unique vision is what constitutes the artist’s Motor. The modus operandi employed constitutes the artist’s Means.
In order to identify one’s particularity, an artist must compare themselves to artists whose work is “close” to their own.
Maxime Chanson proposes to analyze all artists featured in the base via a single concept of proximity: the Motor-Means.
Two artists are considered artistically close if they share the same Motor-Means.
This digital artwork incorporates a database comprising approximately 500 000 artists.
The most renowned artists in the database have their own page, including a definition of their Motor and their Means.
This page also includes pictures and videos of their work, as well as a list of all the artists sharing the same Motor and/or Means.
Having all these elements condensed on a single page, being able to directly access other comparable artists’ pages, and the examination of their work that is presented, offers a way of defining their artistic particularity.
Any artist working in the field of contemporary art can also use it as a tool to determine their own particularity.
After creating a page, the artist must select one of the Motors and one of the Means proposed by the methodology. They will then be presented with a list of artistically similar artists.
