About

artistprofiler.art is an online artwork by Maxime Chanson. It locates each artist's practice on a grid of 24 Motors (the deep motivation behind creation) and 24 Means (the preferred form of expression): 576 possible positions.

More than 2,100 artists have an analytical portrait there, over 1,600 of whom meet the site's recognition criteria. Each portrait gives the artist's position on the grid, a selection of works in images and videos, their presence on the international and French scenes, and the artists who share their Motor or Means.

The group portraits apply the same grid to the artists of a gallery, a collection, an exhibition or a prize; their distribution reveals the profile of whoever brought them together. The Portrait du Prix Marcel Duchamp entered the collection of the Centre Pompidou in 2024.

Any artist can also create a page, choose the Motor and Means that best describe their practice, and see, among the artists who occupy the same position, what makes theirs singular.

The method comes from the book 600 démarches d'artistes (Jannink, 2011), translated and expanded in English as 700 Artists' Processes (2013).
