On artistprofiler.art, all Contemporary Artists can create and complete their own page — a Profile that sets out their artistic approach.
Who is considered a Contemporary Artist?
An artist is considered contemporary if born after 1931 (artists born before that date being generally associated with a historical art movement), not primarily identified with another professional activity, and meeting at least one of the following criteria:
- Their main activity is the production of works in Contemporary Art
- They have taken part in at least three exhibitions in the past ten years in spaces dedicated to Contemporary Art
- The majority of their income comes from the sale of their artworks.
After the artist's death
These conditions assume a living artist. After death, what happens to the work — exhibitions, sales, acquisitions — is no longer the artist's doing: such posthumous events no longer fall under the International Scene, nor the French Scene, nor Contemporary Art in the sense of these conditions, but under the processes of categorisation and recognition through which art history is written. The Profile remains.
Duos and collectives
A duo or a collective forms a single Artist, designated by the name under which it exhibits, as long as its permanent members outnumber its passing members. A permanent member is one present throughout the period of the solo exhibitions on which its recognition rests under the criteria of the International Scene or the French Scene. For any given period, a member and their collective have only one Profile, that of the more recognised signature; before or after, the member's individual practice has its own. Why a single name?
How are Profiles organised?
Artists' Profiles take the form of pre-filled pages created for artists belonging to one of the three Scenes: International Scene and French Scene, defined by recognition criteria, or Prominence Scene, defined by visibility criteria.
Contemporary artists not yet belonging to a Scene — emerging artists — can create and complete their own page and define their profile there.
