artistprofiler.art is an online artwork by Maxime Chanson. It describes each artist's creative process through two typologies: 24 Motors (what drives the artist to create) and 24 Means (the constant in the realisation of their works), 576 possible combinations.
More than 2,100 artists have a profile on the site, over 1,600 of whom meet the site's recognition criteria. A profile is an artist's practice categorised under one type of each typology: one Motor and one Means. These profiles are the material of artistprofiler.art. Each artist page shows a profile, their presence on the international and French scenes, and the artists who share their Motor or Means.
The group portraits are artworks in their own right, within the site. In them, Maxime Chanson arranges the profiles of the artists of a gallery, a collection, an exhibition or a prize; their distribution reveals the profile of whoever brought them together. The Portrait du Prix Marcel Duchamp entered the collection of the Centre Pompidou in 2024.
Any artist can also create a page, choose the Motor and Means that best describe their practice, and see, among the artists who occupy the same position, what makes theirs singular.
The method comes from the book 600 démarches d'artistes (Jannink, 2011), translated and expanded in English as 700 Artists' Processes (2013).
