← About › Maxime Chanson

Maxime Chanson (b. 1983, Saint-Germain-en-Laye) is a French visual artist. A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2007), he received the Grand Prix of the 57th Salon de Montrouge in 2012 (jury chaired by Jan Hoet). The prize led to a solo exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo and to exhibitions at the Bonnefantenmuseum (Maastricht). In 2024, his digital work Portrait du Prix Marcel Duchamp entered the collection of the Centre Pompidou.

Since 2016 he has been developing artistprofiler.art, an online artwork that locates each artist's practice on a grid of 24 Motors (the deep motivation behind creation) and 24 Means (the preferred form of expression). The method is set out in his book 600 démarches d'artistes (Jannink, 2011; expanded English edition, 700 Artists' Processes, 2013). His group portraits show how the artists of a gallery, an exhibition or a prize are distributed across this grid; that distribution portrays whoever brought them together, as with the exhibitions 010101 (SFMOMA, 2001) and Welt am Draht (Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin, 2016).

The grid makes no exception for its author: his self-portrait places him at Motor 2 (Space) and Means 1 (Clinical), alongside Daniel Buren, Dan Graham, Sol LeWitt and Jorge Pardo, among others.
